When to shop for car insurance
A policy is priced once per term, then left alone until something changes. These are the dates and events worth putting in your calendar, and what to do at each one.

Bottom line
Your price is set for each policy term, so the renewal notice is the natural moment to compare. Some states set how early it must arrive: Maryland, for example, requires a renewal increase to be mailed at least 45 days ahead. Shop again when your life changes the facts the price rests on: a move, a new or different car, a driver joining or leaving the household, or a ticket or accident getting old enough to stop counting. In 2026 the market itself is moving too: the federal price index for car insurance was 5.0% lower in September 2026 than a year earlier, so a renewal increase is worth checking against fresh quotes.
Your renewal notice is the first cue
Insurers reprice a policy at the end of each term, usually every six or twelve months. The renewal offer is the first place a new rate filing, a new surcharge or a lost discount shows up, and it arrives before the new price starts. That window is your shopping time: long enough to collect quotes on the same coverage, and short enough that the quotes still reflect the price you would actually pay.
How early the notice must come, and what it must say, depends on your state. A few examples from state regulators and lawmakers:
| State | What the insurer must do |
|---|---|
| Maryland | Mail a renewal premium increase at least 45 days before it takes effect; an increase caused by a claim or ticket can be challenged within 30 days of the notice |
| Illinois | From July 1, 2027, give at least 30 days' notice before a renewal increase of more than 10% (Senate Bill 714, Public Act 104-0753, as reported by NPR Illinois) |
| Indiana | Give 20 days' notice if it decides not to renew at the end of a term |
| Oregon | Give at least 30 days' notice, with a reason, of a nonrenewal or a cancellation for reasons other than nonpayment |
Read the notice line by line against your current declarations page. If the total went up, the lines that moved tell you whether the cause is the market or something on your own record, which our guide to why your premium went up separates.
The market has turned in 2026
The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks car insurance prices in its Consumer Price Index. After the steep increases of 2023 and 2024, the index was still 2.8% higher in December 2025 than a year earlier. With May 2026 data it dropped below its year-earlier level for the first time in this cycle, by 2.0%, and in September 2026 it stood 5.0% below September 2025.
Some state regulators report the same turn. Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation said in March 2026 that the state's five largest auto insurance groups were indicating an average change of −8.0% for 2026. An index is an average, not your bill, but it changes the question you should ask at renewal: if prices are falling on average and yours is rising, find out why, and see what other insurers would charge.
Life changes that reprice your policy
You move
Where the car is kept is a rating factor, so even a move across town can change the price; a move to another state also changes the coverage the law requires. Tell your insurer before the move and quote the new address. See location and ZIP code.
You buy, sell or finance a car
A different car changes collision, comprehensive and often liability prices. A lender or leasing company will usually require collision and comprehensive, which is a good moment to compare deductibles too.
A driver joins or leaves
The NAIC warns that leaving a licensed household member off a policy can lead to cancellation or an added premium later. In North Carolina, drivers first licensed on or after July 1, 2025 pay the inexperienced operator surcharge for eight years instead of three, so adding one is a reason to compare.
Your household changes
Marriage, a divorce or a child moving out changes who is listed and which cars share a policy. Insurers commonly give a multi-car discount, which Texas and Maine regulators both list.
Each of these is also a reason to check your coverage, not only the price. A new car may need gap coverage while the loan is larger than its value; an older car may no longer be worth a low collision deductible.
When an old ticket or accident stops counting
Surcharges for tickets and at-fault accidents last for a set period, and the end of that period is a good time to get quotes. How long depends on the state and the insurer:
- Maryland doesn't let an insurer raise your rate over an accident or traffic violation more than three years old.
- North Carolina surcharges convictions carrying four or more insurance points for five years instead of three, for policies written or renewed on or after July 1, 2025.
- California requires Good Driver rates at least 20% lower than the same company's rates for other drivers. A driver licensed for at least three consecutive years with no more than one point qualifies.
Your current insurer may apply the change at renewal on its own, but another company may weigh the same record differently. Our page on driving record explains how violations feed into a price. If your credit has improved and your state allows credit in pricing, ask for a re-rate at the same time; Maryland, for example, lets you ask for a recheck once per policy period.
A shopping calendar
- Write down your renewal date and set a reminder a few weeks before it, so you have time to compare without a rush.
- Add the dates that change your record: the third anniversary of a ticket or accident, a teen's licensing date, the payoff date of a car loan.
- Get three or more quotes on the same limits and deductibles when the renewal arrives or a life change happens, and compare them line by line.
- Switch only with the new policy in force: set its start date before you cancel the old one, as our guide to switching without a gap explains.
Questions drivers ask
How often should I shop for car insurance?
At each renewal is a sensible habit, and also whenever you move, change cars, add or remove a driver, or an old ticket or accident stops counting. No law sets a schedule.
Is it a good time to shop for car insurance in 2026?
On average, prices are falling: the BLS index for motor vehicle insurance was 5.0% lower in September 2026 than a year before. Your own price still depends on your record, car and address. Dated changes are listed on rate news.
Can I switch car insurance before my policy renews?
Yes. Start the new policy first, then cancel the old one in writing. Ask how the refund of unused premium is calculated, because some policies keep a cancellation charge.
Does getting quotes hurt my credit?
No. Insurers check credit with soft inquiries, which don't lower your credit score.
